Thanks for your comment and good wishes. I hope you enjoy ‘Martha’s Girls’ – let me know what you think. I’ve had a look round your excellent websites. I can’t believe you’re relatively new to writing poetry – you have a well-crafted style and some interesting insights. I’m hoping to read them again more closely when I’m off work next week.
      Best wishes, Alrene,

    • Hi Helen
Yes you can get Martha’s Girls on Kobo. Not sure about Adobe Digital – I’ll ask the publisher. Are you in Australia? Some people there have got it through Kobo. How did you hear about the book?

  1. Hi Arlene,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I’m in Canada but was born in Belfast. I heard of your book from my friend who also lives in Canada but was born in Ballymena.
I would very much like to download your book to my Kobo.
    Best wishes,

I bought Martha’s girls for my Mum at your book signing in Belfast and she really loved the book. She would have been 14 at the time in which the book is set and remembers many of the places referred to and your descriptions invoked many memories. I also read it and could not put it down. I like your style of of writing which makes it an easy read and I am eager to read more. I would like to see you get more recognition as you are up there with the rest of the more established writers.

    • Hello Pamela
I hope you and your mum are keeping well. Just thought I’d let you know that I’m over in Belfast at the moment and I’ll be in the main Belfast Eason’s in Donegall Place from 2.30pm this Saturday 19th Oct. Martha’s Girls has been re published by Blackstaff Press and I’m there doing a signing. I know you have already bought the book but if you’re in the city at that time come along and say hello.
      All the best

  3. Hi Alrene. Greetings from Spain. I have passed your book around the plueblo and everyone has enjoyed it very much and look forward to a second book. Hope you are well. Kind regards. BD (Brian Dunning)

  4. Hi Arlene
You might recall that we met when I worked at Coney Green High School (RIP)
I was impressed to see your article in the Impartial Reporter during a half term visit last week. I had not been aware that you had been published but your novel seems like a
great read and there is a wide range of very positive comments on the internet about it. I will look forward to reading it and I will make sure that my Mum gets it on her book club list!
    Well done on your success.
    Bryan Kee

    • Hi Brian, I hope you are well and still enjoying life in Scotland. Just thought I’d let you and your mum know that the sequel to Martha’s Girls is being launched in Belfast on 12 March. It’s called ‘The Golden Sisters’.
You’ll no doubt know that Radcliffe Riverside closed last summer. Lisa is now working at Tottington High – I see her quite often. All the best, Alrenexx

  5. Dear Alrene,
I really loved Martha’s Girls your first book. I would be very interested to know which girl was your mother, and also ifvanyof them are still alive . I hope you have another book on the go as I will get it as soon as possible.

    • Hi Barry, good to hear from you and thank you for the lovely 5* review on Amazon. I really appreciate it.
To answer your questions: my mother was Irene, the eldest of the girls and Sandy was my father. Sadly, all the girls are gone now and only Sheila the youngest knew I was writing the book, but it wasn’t published until after she died. I like to think that maybe they all know I wrote it for them. The sequel to Martha’s Girls is written and with the publishers, so it shouldn’t be too long before it’s available. All the best, Alrene.

  6. Arlene I have just finished reading Martha’s girls and The Golden Sisters and have thoroughly enjoyed both books. I wonder if there is a third one in the pipeline?

    • Hello Ann, lovely to hear from you and I’m so glad you enjoyed the books. I finished the third book – the final one in the Martha’s Girls series – just yesterday and it’s now with the publishers. It takes the girls from the end of The Golden Sisters to VE day. I’m hoping it will be out towards the end of June. Thank you for taking the time to let me know what you thought of the books, much appreciated. All the best, Alrenex

      • I will look forward to reading the third book when it comes out. Ann
